Organisations & Charities

The Decider Skills upskill staff to promote mental health and wellbeing to increase support, recovery and advocacy.

The skills provide effective, evidence based, cost-effective, quality training for ALL workers and volunteers.

Mental health outcomes can be improved

Mental health is high on the agenda due to the increase in stress and mental health problems.  1 in 4 of us will suffer from mental health problems each year (McManus et al 2016).

Stress, anxiety, depression and suicide are impacting our whole society.

  • 25% of us are going to be affected by a mental health issue (Mind).
  • 10% of young people aged 5-16 have a diagnosed mental health problem (Kessler et al).
  • 50% of all mental health problems are established by the age of 14 (Gov.uk) and 75% by the age of 18.

The rationale for early intervention is strong.

As Frederick Douglass said: "It is easier to build strong children than it is to repair broken adults".

Effective skills to manage emotions and mental health

The Decider Skills use Cognitive Behavioural Therapy to teach children, young people and adult skills to recognise their own thoughts, feeling and behaviours allowing them to monitor their own emotions and mental health.

The skills were designed to enable participants to make effective changes to help manage distress, regulate emotion, increase mindfulness, promote effective communication and help to live a more skilful, less impulsive life.

The Decider Skills empower children, young people and adults the skills to help them recognise their own thoughts, feelings and behaviours, allowing them to monitor and manage their own emotions and mental health.

The Decider Skills enable individuals to make effective changes in how they manage distress, regulate emotion, increase mindfulness, communicate effectively and live a more skilful, less impulsive life.  Resulting in more resilient, responsible, resourceful, robust, reflective children, young people and adults.

The Decider Life Skills

The Decider Life Skills are 12 Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) skills designed to be taught to groups and individuals using a fun, creative and interactive style.

The 12 skills have been taken from the original 32 Decider Skills, simplified further for use as proactive mental health for children, young people and adults.

The Decider Skills for charities and organisations

Organisations can choose between The Decider 32 therapeutic skills for those with mental health problems, and The Decider 12 Life Skills for proactive mental health - for everybody!

We recommend that The Decider is embedded across the whole organisation to enable consistency for all, and to create a common language and understanding.

The workers and volunteers learn The Decider Skills to be able to teach their clients, and they will also find that they benefit from using the skills for themselves.  The Decider Skills positively impact on both clients and staff.

This is an exciting development for Action for Children in further strengthening the support services our social care workforce delivers to children, young people and families.  Jess McCallion, AFC Training Manager

There isn’t a day that goes by when we don’t use The Decider Life Skills with our young people. The variety of skills showed in the handbook ensures that each person can select the skills that work for their individual needs. The trainers book is just as clearly written as the young person's handbook, which makes it really simple to teach with individuals or small groups.  Emma C.    Youth Worker
