Kelly Maden, Assistant Headteacher at Walney School in Cumbria, first completed The Decider Skills training while working as the DSL and Student Conduct and Development Lead. Knowing that Family Action delivered the programme, she felt the skills could be useful in her school setting.
After completing the training, Kelly signed up the school’s pastoral leads. The team then cascaded the skills through form times and assemblies so that all students were introduced to them. Every student completed a Fizz Scale, and the skills are now used regularly across the school.
To help embed the approach further, Kelly is signing up the Senior Leadership Team and new pastoral leaders. She explains that these staff “encounter students most in need of the skills day‑to‑day and can help to co‑regulate students by walking them through the skills until they can do it for themselves.”
Kelly describes The Decider Skills as “great – so user friendly,” adding, “The more schools using them, the better!”
